5 Keys to Choosing the Right Nursing Bra
The right nursing bra can make all the difference between a peaceful breastfeeding experience or, on the contrary, a mega-pain in the neck. But how can you be sure to make the right choice? Here are 5 keys to absolutely take into account to find the PERFECT bra that will offer you comfort, support and make your life easier.
Picture this: in the middle of the night, your baby is crying and asking for your breast. You wake up, you feel the urgency, but you're tangled up in complicated fasteners. Your nursing bra is soaked (oops, a pad has escaped again). As best you can, you put your baby to the breast, and he finally calms down.
This scenario is not fiction: I lived it almost every night during the first weeks of my first breastfeeding. So, I tell you: you deserve better, and peaceful breastfeeding is possible ! It all comes down to choosing the right nursing bra.
So how do you choose a good nursing bra? There are 5 key points that you should definitely check before buying anything.
1. The perfect nursing lingerie: comfort above all
Goodbye underwire! We're not here to be tortured. Your boobs already get a lot more sensitive during pregnancy, so imagine when they're full of milk 😣.
There are plenty of non-wired nursing bras and bras that offer you very good support. And for good reason: underwires give shape to the breast by shaping it, but do not offer additional support (did you know that?). In addition, underwires can block the milk ducts and cause mastitis and other engorgement. So really, forget about underwires and boning!
Another super important point to consider: materials. Avoid synthetic materials that make you sweat, and instead opt for soft, breathable materials like organic cotton. And if you have leaks, choose washable pads that are Oeko-Tex 100 certified to guarantee that they are free of harmful chemicals, or even better: a bra with built-in absorbency, also certified.
2. A nursing bra that really supports you
Make sure the bra offers good support. The straps should be adjustable and a little wider than your usual bra to take the strain off your back and support your boobs, which will be heavy with milk.
The other essential point is to have a slightly wide elastic band (but not too wide) under the chest to ensure support and comfort, without cutting. Different nursing bras and bras also have different shapes, more or less “enveloping”: try several to determine the shape that suits you best.
3. Breastfeed easily... by easily opening your nursing support
The easy one-handed clips are a must! They allow you to feed your baby easily and quickly, even outdoors. Other options: magnets, or the “wrap-around” opening in the middle.
4. A suitable and adaptable nursing bra
Your breasts can change size during pregnancy and breastfeeding (I know, it complicates things even more 🙈). Between the end of pregnancy, the rise of milk, and the stabilization of your lactation, there can be a difference of a cup size!
So choose a bra with stretchy cups and several hooks at the back, to adjust the size as you go. This will allow you to keep the same bra from the 6th month of pregnancy to the end of your breastfeeding, or even beyond!
5. Nursing bra or bra: choose a design that you like!
You deserve better than a gray synthetic nursing bra that will fall apart after a few weeks. You're going to wear this bra for several months (between pregnancy, breastfeeding, and maybe even beyond!), so get one that you really like . Beautiful materials, a design that you like, neat finishes, pretty details... it's not superficial. You'll never have seen your bra so much, so you might as well like it!
Breastfeeding should be a moment of tenderness and connection with your baby, not a wrestling match with your bra. With the right nursing bra or nursing bra, you will feel comfortable and confident, with peace of mind to breastfeed serenely.
